All About Konjac Sponges

Updated: Mar 26, 2019

Konjac Sponge.... What the heck is this thing?!?

I'm gonna tell you!!

The increasingly popular konjac sponge can help naturally cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish skin. It's made from all natural fibers from the dried root of the Konjac plants native to Asia. So really it's just plant fibers, ALL NATURALE!

How they make these sponges is actually pretty simple. Konjac root powder is mixed with calcium hydroxide, heated, frozen and then dried. The calcium yields an alkaline end product that helps to balance an overly acidic skin's pH. This causes pure konjac sponge to appear white or cream in colour however, Sometimes powdered charcoal, green clay or red clay is added to benefit different skin types and further draw out skin impurities.

Charcoal is great for oily and acne prone skin, pink and red is usally for sensitive and dehydrated skin , green for combination skin and white/pure is best if you have sensitive skin and want to avoid any possible irritants.

When you receive your konjac sponge it's hard...like rock hard, and you may think that this thing is going to scrape off your face! This is because when using your sponge for the first time you must place it in warm water for 15mins and allow it to absorb water and become soft and squishy.

To use, gently squeeze the water out, and here is where you decide if you like to use your sponge with or without a Cleanser. Personally, I choose not to use a cleanser with my sponge.

Rub the konjac sponge on the face in upward, circular motions and concentrate on dry or blackhead-prone areas. The konjac sponge is a mild exfoliator, so it may feel like you need to scrub hard to get it to work, but that definitely isn’t necessary. These sponges will remove dirt, sunscreen, and even makeup if you desire.

I use it to clean around my delicate eye area as it removes the leftover makeup from my eyes and I don't have to worry about blinding myself with makeup remover, or looking like a raccoon until the next morning.

When finished rinse the konjac sponge well with cool water and gently squeeze the excess water out.

Hang it to dry, or put it on a rack so there’s airflow. Make sure to store it away from light and humidity. Right next to your steamy shower isn’t the best option for your konjac sponge.

It is recommended that every 2 weeks, place your konjac sponge in very hot (but not boiling) water for about 5 minutes to disinfect it. Especially if you use ur sponge for makeup removal. Alternatively, you can use warm water instead of cold water after each use to clean your sponge.

After 4-6 weeks, pitch the sponge and get a new one. It’s time to replace the sponge when it no longer expands properly when wet and it starts to disintegrate.

Personally, I love my konjac sponge, especially for when I start to get blackheads and pimples around my T-zone the use of the sponge 2x a day for about 3 days helps clear it up quickly and I avoid cleansers with salicylic acid etc. I wouldn't be hesitant to suggest it to anyone as I think it's actually suitable for everyone, even babies and small children.

Here ends my blog today!!!
